The elbow is a complex joint that allows for a wide range of movement in the arm. However, it is also a joint that is easily susceptible to injury. The risk of elbow injury is often increased during sports activities and/or repetitive elbow movements.
At Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement Specialists, we want our patients to live happy, healthy lives without pain. That's why we've taken the liberty of listing the top six elbow injuries to watch out for, and how you can prevent them.
1. Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that occurs when the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle bone of the elbow are damaged from repetitive use. This condition is common in athletes who play tennis, but it can also occur in people who perform repetitive activities such as typing or using a screwdriver. Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, weak grip strength, and difficulty in fully extending the arm. To help prevent tennis elbow, make sure you are using the correct posture when playing sports or doing other activities, taking frequent breaks to rest your elbow, and using proper technique to reduce stress on the arm muscles.
2. Golfer's Elbow
Golfer's elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition that occurs when the tendons that attach to the medial epicondyle bone of the elbow are damaged from repetitive use. This condition is common in athletes who play golf, but it can also occur in people who perform repetitive activities such as lifting weights or carrying heavy objects. Symptoms of the golfer's elbow include pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow, weak grip strength, and difficulty in fully flexing the arm. Preventing this injury is similar to preventing tennis elbow, but it's important to focus on strengthening the muscles in the forearm and wrist that are used for gripping.
3. Elbow Dislocation
An elbow dislocation occurs when the bones that make up the elbow joint are forced out of their normal positions. This condition can be caused by trauma, falling onto an outstretched hand, or a hard blow to the elbow. Symptoms of an elbow dislocation include severe pain, swelling, deformity, and inability to move the elbow. Elbow dislocations can be extremely painful, so it's important to seek medical attention immediately if you suspect a dislocation. To prevent elbow dislocations, it's important to take precautions such as wearing protective gear while playing sports, and paying close attention to your surroundings when performing everyday activities.
4. Elbow Fracture
An elbow fracture occurs when one or more of the bones that make up the elbow joint is broken. This condition can be caused by trauma, falling onto an outstretched hand, or a hard blow to the elbow. Symptoms of an elbow fracture include severe pain, swelling, deformity, and inability to move the elbow. If you want to reduce your risk of a fracture, make sure to follow safety precautions such as wearing protective gear while playing sports and using the correct form when lifting weights.
5. Olecranon Bursitis
Olecranon bursitis is a condition that occurs when the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates the joint, becomes inflamed. This condition can be caused by trauma, infection, or repetitive friction. Symptoms of olecranon bursitis include swelling, tenderness, and redness on the back of the elbow. To help prevent this condition, you should use the correct posture when performing activities and take frequent breaks to rest your elbow.
6. Radial Head Fracture
A radial head fracture occurs when the radial head, the bone that connects the elbow joint to the wrist, is broken. This condition can be caused by trauma, falling onto an outstretched hand, or a hard blow to the elbow. Symptoms of a radial head fracture include severe pain, swelling, and inability to move the elbow. Try to reduce your risk of a fracture by taking safety precautions such as wearing protective gear while playing sports and warming up properly before activity.
